The Health Secretary reports the first human case of myiasis caused by the Cochliomyia hominivorax in a 77-year-old woman from Acacoyagua, Chiapas. She is stable and receiving treatment.


First Case of Myiasis Detected in Chiapas

The Health Secretariat has confirmed the detection of the first human case of myiasis caused by the screwworm Cochliomyia hominivorax. The affected patient is a 77-year-old woman residing in the municipality of Acacoyagua, Chiapas. Following this finding, the State Services of Chiapas have initiated the corresponding investigation.

The affected woman is in stable condition and is receiving treatment with an antibiotic regimen at the Ciudad Salud High Specialty Hospital in Tapachula, where she remains under medical observation. The authorities of Agriculture and Health are carrying out interventions to safeguard the health of the general population.

Personnel from the National Service of Health, Safety, and Quality of Agro-foods (SENASICA) are conducting training on epidemiological surveillance and the prevention and control of myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax. Furthermore, an epidemiological brigade from the health jurisdiction of Tapachula has launched health promotion actions, epidemiological surveillance, and containment in the locality where the affected patient resides.
