Mexican authorities have arrested six hitmen for their alleged involvement in the murder of U.S. Marine Nicholas Douglas Quets in Sonora. The crime occurred on October 18 and generated criticism from the upcoming Vice President of the United States, JD Vance.
According to the National Coordination of Antikidnapping and High Impact Crimes (Conase), three of the detainees claimed to be relatives of Erick Cabrera, alias 'El Delta 1', and confessed to belonging to Los Pelones de Sonoyta and their armed wing Los Deltas. These criminal groups have been linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.
The Marine was leaving Arizona and was heading to Puerto Peñasco for vacation when he was intercepted by hitmen on the highway. After an escape attempt, the assailants opened fire, resulting in the driver's death, while the women with him were unharmed.
The arrest of the suspects took place following inspections of safe houses linked to the criminal group. Previously, a judge had processed two of them for the crime against Quets. Additionally, the Mexican Army killed two hitmen who were in the vehicle used in the attack on the Marine.
Among those detained are Jorge Luis S.V.; Brayan Axiel G.C.; Ulises P.A.; Luis Felipe G.C.; Andriuk Wilam C.L.; and Javier G. A. These individuals will face charges for their alleged involvement in the murder of the U.S. citizen.
