The activist Karina Ruiz Ocampo, who had been missing since April 13, was found dead, her family confirmed. Ruiz Ocampo's body was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition in Amatitlán, near El Arenal, last Saturday. She was identified at kilometer 40 on the Guadalajara-Tepic highway, near Los Gallos Garden.
Ruiz Ocampo stood out in her work as an activist fighting for access to water in a subdivision that has suffered from shortages since 2012. According to the newspaper Reforma, residents in the area only have 30 minutes of water supply per day. This problem, which affects about 7,000 people, reportedly originates from the construction company's debts with the Federal Electricity Commission.
The activist had received threats on social media, where individuals suggested stealing her motorcycle or lynching her. These intimidations led her to consider abandoning her activism, as reported by Reforma. On April 13, a group of individuals entered her home around 8:00 PM and took her away, after which her family filed a missing persons report with the Vice Prosecutor's Office for Missing Persons, which initiated an investigation.
