The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, issued a strong message to American politicians, asking them not to use Mexico as the center of their political campaigns. During an event in Campeche, Sheinbaum expressed her rejection of the instrumentalization of Mexico in the political discourse of the United States, especially in the lead-up to state elections in that country.
Sheinbaum mentioned family values in Mexico and highlighted a campaign against drug consumption initiated by Mexican President López Obrador. The Mexican leader emphasized that Mexico has differences with Trump regarding the imposition of tariffs, which could reach up to 25% on certain Mexican products imported to the United States.
The President of Mexico stressed that Mexico stands out over the United States in several aspects, such as values, ethics, and development. She recalled a conversation with Donald Trump, where she mentioned the lower incidence of fentanyl consumption problems in Mexico compared to the United States. "Mexico is nobody's piñata," Sheinbaum stated, urging American politicians to focus on the internal challenges of their country.
Despite the disagreements, Sheinbaum remains hopeful of reaching an agreement before the new tariffs on automobile parts come into effect on May 3.
