This Thursday, President Claudia Sheinbaum and her German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier will hold a meeting in Cancún, where the head of state will later give a speech to bankers on the occasion of the 89th Banking Convention.During her morning press conference this Tuesday, the president explained that they will discuss topics related to the friendship, cultural, commercial, and investment relationship between both countries, in view of the update of the trade treaty with Europe, which she advanced will take place in April.In January 2025, Mexico and the European Union concluded the negotiations for the modernization of the TLCUEM after years of analysis and just days before the arrival of Donald Trump to the US presidency.The agreement aims to expand market access in the agricultural and fishing sectors; harmonizes provisions on investment; creates a chapter on trade facilitation; guarantees the non-existence of monopolies for the export and import of raw materials; and creates a chapter on digital trade.Additionally, Mexico will eliminate tariffs on some products from that region.The president recalled that she had previously also met with several businesspeople from Nordic countries regarding the update of this agreement and interested in investing in Mexico, and that in the same vein will be her meeting with the German leader.The meeting will be on March 19, on which day her participation in the Banking Convention is also scheduled at 6:50 p.m. alongside the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit and the head of Banxico, Victoria Rodríguez.Sheinbaum did not want to advance what the axis of the speech she will give on Thursday will be, however, the progress in banking digitalization and credit to small and medium-sized enterprises, which was the agreement signed last year, is under the microscope.
