Infonavit Addresses Housing Issues in Mexico

In a press conference led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, the General Director of the National Workers' Housing Fund Institute (Infonavit), Octavio Romero, revealed that there is an irregular situation with some houses built under the Infonavit scheme. It was reported that 131,000 homes are involved in mass lawsuits that were canceled during the previous administration, 216,000 homes are in the possession of Infonavit but have not yet been deeded, and approximately 89,000 Fovissste homes face similar problems.

Additionally, during Sheinbaum's management, 47,845 homes have been identified across the country, of which 87% are occupied. Plans are in place to recover unoccupied or vandalized homes to offer them through a social rental scheme with an option to purchase.

So far, Infonavit has frozen more than 4 million 155 thousand non-payable credits, offering options such as restructuring, reduced interest rates, and monthly payments, among other supports. Romero explained that the homes surveyed with problems or fraud are mainly concentrated in the State of Mexico, Puebla, Chihuahua, Sonora, and Hidalgo. Infonavit is seeking solutions such as the restructuring of credits, reduction of rates and monthly payments, and terminating credits in cases of unlawful occupation, as well as regularizing them through social leasing with an option to purchase in the case of third-party occupation.

In an incident related to the vandalism of Infonavit homes, the case of Mrs. Carlota in Chalco, State of Mexico, comes to mind, who faced the invasion of her home by people unrelated to her family. The woman, around 70 years old, accompanied by Mariana 'N' and Eduardo 'N', shot a 51-year-old man, causing a gunshot wound to his chest, along with a 19-year-old young man who came to her defense. Mrs. Carlota, 73 years old, nicknamed 'Vengeful Grandma' and 'Hitwoman Grandma', was admitted to the Chalco Penitentiary and Social Reintegration Center.

The violation of property and illegal occupation of homes are serious issues that demand appropriate solutions from the competent authorities.
