Panamerican Highway Closed Due to Sandstorm

A sandstorm, known as a haboob, has caused the closure of the Pan-American Highway in the region of the municipality of Ahumada, in Chihuahua. The administrator of 'Chihuahua Tiempo Severo', Alonso Méndez Torres, alerted about the low visibility that this storm has generated in the area and warned the inhabitants of the Chihuahuan capital and nearby municipalities to take precautions.

The closure of the Pan-American Highway has been implemented in both directions by the National Guard, covering the stretch between kilometers 217 to 273 due to zero visibility. The State Coordination of Civil Protection (CEPC) informed about this measure and recommended that those who had travel plans in the area postpone them.

Additionally, it was communicated that the sandstorm is heading towards the center-south region of the state, which could cause strong winds and visibility difficulties. Drivers are requested to proceed with caution in the affected areas and report any abnormal situations to emergency authorities.

The haboob is a meteorological phenomenon characteristic of desert areas that can transport large amounts of sand or dust, causing dense and high dust walls. This type of storm is common in arid regions around the world, such as the Sahara and some areas of North America.

Alonso Méndez mentioned that the sandstorm could advance towards other municipalities in central and southern Chihuahua in the coming hours, so it is necessary to remain alert. This phenomenon has also been recorded in other parts of the world, such as Australia, Central Asia, and China.

The haboob is a phenomenon associated with thunderstorms that produces large amounts of sand and dust, drastically reducing visibility in the affected area. In Chihuahua, the presence of this storm has generated concern among authorities and the population, who have been alerted about the possible risks and preventive measures to take.
