Riot in Cereso 3: The Reality Behind 'Cell 211'

In Ciudad Juárez, in 2023, a riot occurred in Cereso 3. This event resembles the plot of the novel "Celda 211" written by Francisco Pérez Gandul in 2004, which inspired the homonymous movie from 2009. The series "Celda 211" is the new proposal from Netflix, based on real events taking place in a Mexican prison.

The story focuses on Juan Oliver, played by actor Diego Calva, a lawyer who arrives at the prison to defend inmates accused of human rights violations. However, shortly after arriving, a riot breaks out among the prisoners. During the conflict, the inmates turn the prison into a war zone and mistake Oliver for one of the prisoners.

Amid the chaos, the inmates take hostages intending to negotiate with the authorities, setting the stage for the series' plot. Although the character of Juan Oliver is not inspired by a real person, the event that serves as the basis for the series took place in 2023 in the Social Reintegration Center No. The riot began on January 1st with the aim of distracting the authorities to facilitate the escape of 'El Neto', resulting in the escape of 30 inmates.

After the incident, 17 deaths were reported, including 10 security guards and 7 prisoners, as well as 14 injured. Among the escaped were inmates with sentences for serious crimes who were in the process of being transferred to federal prisons. The state attorney, Roberto Javier Fierro, confirmed that most of the escaped inmates were involved in serious crimes.

The cast of the series "Celda 211" includes actors such as Noé Hernández, Alejandro Puente, Roberto Duarte, Pedro de Tavira, among others. The production consists of 6 episodes with titles such as "Change of Plans", "More Human Conditions", "False Judas", "One of Us", "Human Waste", and "Dead King, Crowned Prince".
