Ciudad Juárez: Alert for Increase in Earthquakes

In Ciudad Juárez, despite not being considered an active seismic zone, an increase in the frequency of tremors has been observed recently. During the year 2025, at least three seismic events have been recorded, including one with a magnitude of 5.0 in January and another of 5.5 in February. Local authorities have emphasized the importance of staying alert and following safety protocols, as well as improving monitoring infrastructure in the region.

According to the National Seismological Service (SSN), the epicenter of the most recent earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8, was located 203 kilometers east of Ciudad Juárez, near the border with Texas, United States, with an estimated depth of 10 kilometers. Although a seismic alert was not activated, the tremor was felt strongly in areas of the east and south of the city.

Seismic activity in the region may also be related to fracking practices in west Texas, which has generated concern among the population. Specialists have pointed out that Ciudad Juárez's location in the tectonic system of the Rio Grande Rift and its proximity to the Hueco-Bolson fault are factors contributing to these seismic movements.

Despite the strong vibrations and oscillations in homes after the most recent earthquake, no casualties or significant material damage were reported. The General Directorate of Civil Protection confirmed that preventive tours were carried out to rule out impacts on key infrastructures and vulnerable areas. Users on social media described the tremor as brief but intense, expressing some concern about the situation.
