Agents of the National Guard of Mexico carried out an operation to search for clandestine tunnels beneath the Rio Bravo, which serves as a natural border between Mexico and the United States. This security deployment aimed to detect possible underground passages used for the illegal crossing of migrants and drugs between both countries.
The excavations were conducted in a specific section of the Rio Bravo, from the Heroes of Health bridge on Villarreal Torres Avenue to gate 36 on the Mexican side. Federal agents used tools to dig holes in search of access to clandestine tunnels, similar to the one uncovered in Ciudad Juárez a month ago, leading to El Paso, Texas, a strategic area on Mexico's northern border.
The clandestine tunnel discovered in January under the riverbed of the Rio Bravo, allegedly used for human trafficking, drugs, and illicit goods, is believed to have been operated by the criminal group 'La Línea'. This finding has intensified search efforts to prevent the construction of new underground passages.
Numerous previous operations have revealed tunnels equipped with ventilation systems, lighting, and makeshift routes for transporting illegal goods. Mexican authorities have intensified surveillance along the border in the past month to combat criminal activities and ensure safety in the region.
Although, to date, no new tunnels have been found in the inspected area, National Guard agents reported that search efforts will continue in the coming days. Border security experts have noted that criminal groups employ increasingly sophisticated methods in tunnel construction, requiring the use of new tracking technologies and sensors in the border area.
The United States and Mexico maintain close collaboration on border security, conducting joint operations and sharing information to combat human and drug trafficking networks in the region.
