In 2022, according to a report by the newspaper Milenio, PetrĂ³leos Mexicanos (Pemex) reported that since 2019 up to the mentioned date, the company had lost up to 234 million pesos due to thefts. The company confirmed the theft that occurred last Thursday at one of its oil platforms in the Gulf of Campeche, stating that security has been reinforced in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar).
The events took place from the night of February 13 and were reported in the media over the weekend. However, Pemex did not issue any communication regarding it until President Claudia Sheinbaum was questioned during her morning conference on Monday. During these four years, 226 theft incidents were reported, mostly in the Gulf of Mexico.
In a later statement, the oil company detailed that a group of individuals not associated with the company illegally boarded the satellite platform Zaap-D in the Gulf of Mexico. They took radio devices, tools, and autonomous breathing equipment. Fortunately, no physical injuries were reported among Pemex personnel, although two workers were evacuated due to possible post-traumatic stress and received medical attention.
Pemex reported that additional security measures have been implemented in the Gulf of Campeche, including increased presence of Physical Security agents and reinforced patrols in collaboration with Semar. This is not the first time the company has suffered such incidents, as similar thefts have also been reported in previous years. In response to the request for more information about the assault, the president asked Pemex to provide additional details.
