Pirate Attack on Pemex Platform in Campeche

The company PetrĂ³leos Mexicanos (Pemex) confirmed an attack by 'pirates' on an offshore platform in the state of Campeche, in the Gulf of Mexico, last Thursday, without any human casualties. Eight individuals not affiliated with Pemex boarded the Zaap Delta-D platform, from the Maloop Zapp Production Asset, located in Ciudad del Carmen, stealing radio devices and various tools and autonomous breathing equipment. Pemex personnel were evacuated without suffering physical harm, only as a precaution due to the situation created by the attackers.

Pemex has reinforced security in the Sonda de Campeche, increasing the number of agents in the area and coordinating increased patrols with the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar). The Union of Oil Workers of the Mexican Republic (STPRM) confirmed the robbery and reported that the affected workers are now safe. Local media reported another attack a day earlier on the KU-H platform in the Sonda de Campeche, which Pemex has not yet officially commented on.

Attacks by 'pirates' in the Gulf of Mexico have been increasing in recent years, making it a region with the country's main oil fields. Between 2018 and 2022, 102 pirate boardings of offshore platforms in the Sonda de Campeche were recorded, of which 36 were thwarted by Semar, according to official data.
