The bet is no small matter: it arrives in a season when thousands of people are looking for short getaways, nearby destinations, and experiences different from traditional tourism. Guanajuato bets on rest during vacations. Beyond the prize, the relevant data for Guanajuato is that the state manages to break into one of the tourism segments with the highest growth potential: wellness tourism. Guanajuato won the 'Mexican Tourism Product Innovation Recognition 2026' in the Wellness Tourism category thanks to a project that achieved something key in current tourism: combining rest, nature, local identity, and economic viability in a single experience. The prize went to the Tierra Madre Boutique Hotel, led by Ingrid Garcés de Isla from the company Camanalli Chamacuero, with a proposal that integrates wellness, nature, and experiences focused on rest and reconnection. The winning project offers gastronomy, a relaxation center, a heated pool, temazcal, deep healing medicine, and an experience focused on rest—a combination that fits the travel trends of those looking to get away for a few days without necessarily betting on the beach or big cities. This distinction also places Comonfort in a different national conversation. Instead of competing only for heritage or cultural tourism, it is now projected as an option for those seeking more personalized, pause-filled experiences and a connection with the environment. In times of digital saturation and express vacations, this niche can be especially attractive. Comonfort enters the wellness tourism map. According to information disseminated by the state government, the proposals were evaluated based on criteria such as innovation, sustainability, authenticity, community integration, market viability, and contribution to the tourism value chain. In this edition, projects from segments such as cultural, gastronomic, adventure, community, ecotourism, inclusive, and romance tourism were awarded. Guanajuato participated with four projects in strategic segments: wellness in Comonfort, gastronomic in Irapuato, inclusive in Tarandacuao, and community in Ocampo. But it was the wellness project that achieved the prize, which is also reported as the first recognition of this kind for the state under the tourism product innovation approach and the first in that category. The official awards ceremony will be held during the 50th Anniversary of the Mexico Tourism Trade Fair 2026, in Acapulco, Guerrero. During these vacations, Guanajuato is attracting not only traditional tourists but also segments where experience, rest, and local identity weigh more and more in the travel decision.
