Basketball Player Gustavo Ayón Confirms Exit from Morena, Emerges as MC's Candidate for Governor

Basketball player Gustavo Alfonso Ayón Aguirre confirmed this Tuesday his resignation from Morena, the party with which he served as municipal president of Compostela, Nayarit, while he is already emerging as a candidate for the governorship of that entity for the 2027 elections under the banner of the Citizen Movement (MC). During the launch of the 'Mexico Believes in Mexico' campaign, the national president of the Citizen Movement, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, publicly announced that Ayón will head the orange project in Nayarit without the need for formal party affiliation, arguing that the party seeks to include citizen profiles and not strictly political ones. 'We do not demand party affiliation, we do not demand that people stop being citizens to use this vehicle, but (yes) that they can lead an effort of real change, of a real alternative, as we have called ourselves, in the case of Nayarit,' declared Álvarez Máynez at the event where he presented Ayón as a prospect for the governorship. Ayón, for his part, explained that he decided to distance himself from Morena due to what he considers a 'lack of congruence' within the party, and emphasized that his public career has been governed by values of work, discipline, and social service. 'I did not like the lack of congruence, what they think, what they say, and what they do. I am not part of that, my life is not that, my life is of work, of constant sacrifice,' he expressed in an interview with the media. The athlete thanked Morena for the opportunity to start in public administration, but affirmed that today his principles lead him to seek a project more aligned with his convictions. 'What I have experienced at the local and state level, today we see how the internal candidates of Morena itself are fighting in a formidable way, I did not want to be part of that because I believe that as public servants we must be a constant example in service and in daily life,' he added. Ayón forged his professional career in the National Professional Basketball League (LNBP) before making the leap to Europe, where he had a successful stint with Real Madrid, with which he won two Euroleague titles, four ACB League championships, and three King's Cups. In 2011, he debuted in the NBA with the New Orleans Pelicans, later playing for the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, and Atlanta Hawks. In 2019, he continued his career with Zenit Saint Petersburg, followed by Astros de Jalisco and Capitanes de Ciudad de México.
