Heavy traffic and an accident caused multi-kilometer traffic jams on the highway between Cuernavaca and Mexico City. Authorities are urging drivers to find alternative routes.

Chaos on Mexico-Cuernavaca Highway Due to Vacationers' Return

Drivers reported minimal vehicle progress and lines of several kilometers, causing travel times of up to four hours or more between Cuernavaca and the capital. According to information from Federal Roads and Bridges (Capufe), heavy traffic was concentrated between approximately kilometer 44 and 73, where progress was slow for much of the morning and afternoon, affecting those returning after their vacations.

Accident and lane reduction worsen traffic In addition to the increase in vehicles, this Sunday a crash against the retaining wall was reported on the Cuernavaca bypass, at kilometer 85, which caused a reduction in lanes towards Mexico City while emergency crews and authorities removed the wrecked vehicle. Although the exact health status of those involved in that crash has not yet been confirmed, the accident response maneuver generated additional congestion in the traffic flow, contributing to the saturation of the highway and an increase in travel times for motorists.

In this situation, Capufe and road authorities have urged drivers to drive with caution, respect speed limits and consider alternative routes, if possible, to reduce time spent in areas with high traffic volume.

Chaos on the Mexico-Cuernavaca Highway: CDMX direction collapsed and turned into a parking lot. Long lines and minimal progress complicate the return of vacationers this weekend.

Recommendations for motorists and travelers Specialists recommend that those still traveling on this route plan their trips in advance and, if possible, avoid peak congestion hours in the afternoon—when the return to CDMX is most intense. It is also suggested to check the status of the highway in real time, through official sources or traffic applications, to make timely decisions about routes and departure times.

In this context, many motorists shared on social media images and testimonials of long lines of vehicles practically stopped for several kilometers, reflecting the magnitude of the traffic problem on the route to the capital.

This Sunday, the Mexico-Cuernavaca Highway, in its section heading towards Mexico City, experienced considerable traffic chaos due to the return of thousands of vacationers after the Easter period.
