On Saturday, February 22, during an event in MapimÃ, Durango, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasized that the country is fighting for justice, democracy, and freedoms, being a free, independent, and sovereign nation. She expressed her admiration for Mexicans who migrated to the United States to support their families, considering them heroes of the homeland.
"Mexico is just a few days away from the deadline set by the government of Donald Trump to impose a 25 percent tariff on products that Mexico exports to the United States" as part of measures to stop the trafficking of fentanyl and the crossing of migrants. The tariffs would include steel, aluminum, gas, and oil, accusing Mexico of "unfair trade".
Experts point out that if this measure is implemented, Mexico would be severely affected, given that around 40% of Mexico's GDP comes from exports, with 80% of these destined for the U.S. A 2% drop in the Mexican economy is projected, with a direct impact on sectors such as the automotive and electrical industries, as well as on the prices of vegetables and fruits.
Sheinbaum highlighted the remittances sent by compatriots that exceeded 60 billion dollars in 2024, of which 80% remains in the U.S. economy. "In the midst of the tension, the president questioned Trump about the imposition of tariffs and whether they would economically harm both nations, reminding that in Mexico, Mexicans decide and no one decides for them."
