
Leopoldo Javier Chávez Vargas is running as a federal judge in the Durango district with the intention of ensuring access to justice in an impartial and committed manner. However, the organization Defensorxs AC has revealed that he was imprisoned for six years for methamphetamine trafficking.
According to data from the National Electoral Institute (INE), Leopoldo Javier Chávez Vargas graduated in Law from the Bilingual University Institute of the State of Durango and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in oral trials. He currently works as a legal advisor in the municipality of Nuevo Ideal, Durango.
In his INE profile, Chávez Vargas mentions his desire to contribute to a judicial system that inspires trust and combats impunity. He was proposed as a candidate by the Legislative Power Committee.
Defensorxs AC highlights that the candidate was imprisoned in the United States for conspiracy, importation, and possession of methamphetamines with intent to distribute, in addition to being arrested in Mexico for driving under the influence.
In November 2015, Leopoldo Javier Chávez was arrested on a passenger bus at the Lincoln Juárez International Bridge, where a bundle of methamphetamines was found hidden in a fire extinguisher under his seat. He spent six years in prison in the United States for these charges.
