Two local authorities from the San Cayetano ejido, belonging to the municipality of El Bosque, have been detained in connection with the death of three minors from Chenalhó, due to consuming poisoned bread, according to Chiapas Prosecutor Jorge Luis Llaven.
The prosecutor detailed to the media that they are investigating the possibility that the authorities of San Cayetano had placed poison in the bread with the intention of exterminating rats, cats, or dogs. Llaven mentioned that they currently have two authorities from the San Cayetano ejido in custody, identified as Martín 'N' and Bartolo 'N'. It is being investigated whether they were the ones who decided to place poison to eliminate animals and whether this accidentally caused the ingestion of toxic substances by the minors.
Regarding the tragic incident, the prosecutor emphasized that the minors, a girl and two boys aged two, four, and six respectively, were visiting the community the day before the incident. After buying candy at a store, they ate poisoned bread that had been abandoned on the street the night before with the intention of eliminating stray dogs.
The mother of the minors reported that upon noticing that the children did not return from the store, she went out to look for them and found them unconscious outside the establishment. Two of the minors had already passed away, while the third was taken to a clinic in Chenalhó, where he also ultimately died.
The prosecutor explained that the cause of death for the three minors was multiple organ failure due to poisoning from ingesting the poison. The bodies of the children were taken to the community of Xunuch for their final farewell.
In light of this event, the State Human Rights Commission officially filed a complaint with the Chiapas government to conduct a thorough investigation into what happened.
