Proposal for Airline Fare Increase in Mexico

The Pacific Airport Group (GAP) plans to increase the Airport Use Fee (TUA) in the terminals it operates, such as Guadalajara. The increase is estimated to be 60% for domestic flights and 40% for international operations. In response to this decision, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has expressed its concern, as it believes that these increases, the highest in the region, would have a significant negative impact on passengers, airlines, and the country's competitiveness.

IATA has urged aviation authorities and airport groups to work on the transparency of the TUA pricing processes. This seeks to reduce the impact on the final cost of airline tickets, benefiting users and the aviation industry as a whole.

GAP operates airports such as Tijuana, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, La Paz, among others, which would be affected by this proposed TUA increase. For its part, the National Chamber of Air Transportation (Canaero) has pointed out that airport groups set their rates at their discretion, calling for greater transparency and consistency with international standards.

In Mexico, nearly 70 airlines have operated around 700 routes between January and August 2024, transporting more than 80.2 million passengers and 521 thousand tons of cargo. It is estimated that by 2024, tourism will contribute to 14.4% of the national GDP, generating approximately 7.56 million jobs, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

Canaero has urged airports to ensure that their plans and rates are transparent, competitive, and aimed at improving services, avoiding unjustified increases that raise airline ticket prices. Alignment with international standards and improvement in pricing practices are key to ensuring the sustainability and development of the aviation industry in the country.
