The Government of Jalisco has started work to configure a new Urban Forest in the municipality of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos. The project covers 9.7 hectares of land on loan in the southeast of the city of Guadalajara, next to the Los Alazanes Dam. It is currently in the conceptual phase and forest projection.
According to the Jalisco governor, Pablo Lemus, "In Jalisco, we plant the first seeds for a new Metropolitan Urban Forest in the municipality of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos." The collaboration of the Metropolitan Citizen Council, the Planning and Management Institute, and the municipal government is highlighted in this project.
The new Metropolitan Forest, known as "Santuario de los Membrillos," will be located in Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos and will benefit over 26,000 people. This project aims to meet the growing need for green spaces in the metropolitan area and promote ecological regeneration, community well-being, air quality, and biodiversity in the state.
Regarding the largest metropolitan forests in Jalisco, the Urban Forest Agency of the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara highlights three main areas. The Metropolitan Park of Guadalajara, with 113 hectares, offers a wide range of outdoor activities. The Los Colomos Forest, founded in 1902, spans 92 hectares and houses various recreational facilities. Lastly, the Huentitán Natural Park features an 8-hectare forest that provides spaces for sports and recreational activities.
