Teen Arrested in Mexico for Double Homicide at School

A 15-year-old adolescent has been arrested in connection with a double homicide. The incident occurred on March 24th at the 'Antón Makárenko' high school in the city of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. According to the investigation, the young man entered the educational facility with an AR-15 assault rifle hidden in a guitar case. He shot two school employees: María del Rosario Sagrero Chávez, the school's academic coordinator, and Tatiana Madrigal Bedolla, the administrative secretary. One victim was shot in the nape of the neck while at a counter, and the other attempted to take cover but was reached by the aggressor during a second approach. Ballistics reports indicate that 14 shots were fired, with eight hitting the victims. At the scene, 14 spent casings and 64 live cartridges were secured. The Attorney General of Michoacán, Carlos Torres Piña, stated that the teenager had posted stories on Instagram showing the weapon. His accounts were also found to contain videos referencing school shootings and American criminal Charles Manson. Furthermore, an investigation uncovered links to the 'incel' (involuntary celibate) subculture and the consumption of content with anti-feminist rhetoric. A specialized judge ordered the adolescent's preventive internment in a juvenile detention facility. However, under Mexican law, which adheres to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, minors must be tried under a specialized system that prioritizes social reintegration. If convicted, the maximum sentence the teenager could receive is three years in prison. The victims' relatives demanded that the adolescent be tried as an adult.
