US Issues Security Alert for La Paz Due to Violence

Due to several incidents of violence recorded in Baja California Sur, the United States (US) Consulate has issued a security alert for the municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos. The purpose of this measure is to recommend that American citizens remain alert to potential risks.

The US Government has highlighted acts of violence that occurred specifically between April 22 and April 25 in the region. These incidents include two murders on April 22, the first of which took place in Guerrero Negro, where a lieutenant of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) was shot dead by an armed group while performing civil activities. The second case reported that same day occurred in La Paz, where the commander of the Narcotics Unit of the State Attorney General's Office, Ulises Omar Cota Montaño, was killed by an armed command in the Camino Real neighborhood.

On April 24, in Cabo San Lucas, an attack on transportation units was documented, with three trucks set on fire by civilians, as confirmed by authorities from the State Security Table. This led to the paralysis of public service in the main tourist destination of the region. In the early morning of April 25, a shootout was reported between security forces and a criminal cell in neighborhoods of Cabo San Lucas, culminating in the detention of four civilians and one member of the security forces injured.

In light of these events, the US Government has issued a security alert advising its citizens who are in La Paz and Los Cabos to stay vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities. Threats against heads of security corporations have also been reported, so an increase in operations, restrictions on public services, and other strategies to address violence in the region are expected.

Therefore, the US government has recommended that its citizens avoid crowds, pay attention to their surroundings, and leave any place where they perceive a situation of tension in the social environment. They are also urged to stay in contact with friends and family during their stay in the region.
