A gas leak was recorded this Thursday night at the exploratory well Krem 1, in the Constitución Mexicana ejido, municipality of Las Choapas, and generated a fire, confirmed the Veracruz State Civil Protection Secretariat. According to the official statement, no injuries were reported, and the situation did not pose an immediate risk to the population, so the evacuation of residents was not necessary. The fire is reported to be active, with no injuries recorded at the moment; likewise, it does not pose an immediate risk to the population, so precautionary evacuations have not been necessary. However, the presence of large flames and the smell of gas caused alarm in nearby communities, such as Las Cruces, Las Guadalupe, and López Rayón, located several kilometers from the disaster site. The fire originated from a leak in a pipeline within the well's facilities and was dealt with in a coordinated manner by Pemex's firefighting brigades. Municipal and state Civil Protection personnel, Las Choapas Firefighters, Municipal Police, and the company Alimsa also participated, implementing specialized protocols to control the fire and monitor gas release. Authorities recommended that the population stay away from the area until the complete containment of the fire is confirmed. Civil Protection and Pemex are coordinating the response with Las Choapas Firefighters and Municipal Police, as well as personnel from the company Alimsa, and recommend that the public not approach the area to avoid risks. Videos shared on social media showed Pemex workers leaving the area as the flames reached several meters in height, visible from kilometers away. The situation caused fear and concern among the population due to possible gas emissions and risks associated with hydrocarbon combustion and potential explosions. Recently, a spill of unknown origin has reached the beaches of southern Veracruz, affecting rivers and nearby ecosystems, which adds to the concern in the communities around the Krem well. To date, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has not issued any information regarding this incident, nor has it reported on the condition of pipelines and other infrastructure in the area.
