In 2025, the Research Center in Optics A.C. (CIO) in León, Guanajuato, stands out for its advancements in the field of quantum physics, especially due to its participation in the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, proclaimed by the UN. Dr. Bernardo Mendoza, the principal investigator of the CIO, emphasizes the importance of raising societal awareness about the value of science and its positive impact on daily life.
In this context, outreach talks are planned in León to bring quantum science concepts closer to the local community. The idea is for the general public to understand how scientific knowledge improves quality of life and how quantum science drives innovations in sustainable development and global communications.
The CIO is recognized for its outstanding work in quantum research and has specialized laboratories on the subject. According to Dr. Mendoza, the proclamation of 2025 as the year of quantum mechanics aims to sensitize people about its everyday impact and to promote greater interest in its study. He highlights that technologies like lasers, essential in optical communications, are based on quantum principles.
The Quantum Photonics laboratory of the CIO focuses on the design and implementation of quantum photonic circuits, showcasing the center's commitment to basic and applied research in optics and photonics. In this sense, the active participation of the CIO in the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology highlights León's role as a center of scientific innovation in Mexico.
