Security Crisis in Sinaloa: Demands for Change

The state of Sinaloa is immersed in a deep security crisis, leading the population to demand a change of direction. According to a survey conducted by the newspaper Reforma, 62% of citizens are calling for the resignation of Rubén Rocha, the current governor of the entity. This situation has revived rumors of a possible resignation by Rocha, especially in light of protests over insecurity and pressure from the United States for Mexico to take more decisive measures against organized crime.

Rubén Rocha has been backed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, who supported him during her presidential campaign when she was head of government of Mexico City. Key decisions are expected to be made in the coming weeks that could affect the current situation in Sinaloa and meet the demands of the population.

Amid this scenario, two prominent profiles have emerged as possible candidates to succeed Rocha: Senator Enrique Izunza Cázares and Gerardo Vargas Landeros, the mayor of Ahome. Izunza Cázares has Rocha’s trust, as well as the support of important figures from Morena, which positions him as a solid option.

On the other hand, Vargas Landeros has successfully transformed Ahome into one of the safest municipalities in Mexico, which provides him with significant popular support. His administration has attracted millions in investments and has stood out in polls as a strong candidate to succeed Rocha in the governorship of Sinaloa in 2027, also having the backing of the local business community.
