
On Valentine's Day, an earthquake shook the state of Guerrero, although the exact intensity of the tremor is still unknown. The alert was issued by the SkyAlert application and later shared on social media, specifying that the nearby sensor was located in the city of Marquelia, Guerrero.
The seismic movement was felt in several areas, reaching as far as Puebla and the southern part of Mexico City. Residents shared their experiences on social media, such as a resident of the Cuauhtémoc neighborhood who recorded how the decorations in her house moved during the earthquake.
The National Coordination of Civil Protection of the Government of Mexico is already in contact with state and municipal authorities in Guerrero to begin assessments. Initial reports mentioned that the earthquake had an intensity of 5.2 degrees according to SkyAlert and the National Seismological Service of UNAM.
The National Seismological Service detailed that the earthquake reached a magnitude of 5.2 degrees in the southeastern region of Ometepec and 4.8 in the southeastern area of San Marcos. Despite exceeding 5 degrees, the Seismic Alert System explained why the alert was not activated in Mexico City on this occasion.
The seismic movement was felt lightly in Cuajinicuilapa, Guerrero, and with lesser intensity in nearby towns such as San Marcos and Ometepec. The epicenter was located in Marquelia, Guerrero, at 09:27 hours according to the records of the Seismic Alert System.
