A federal judge has issued a preventive detention order against Tomás Jesús Yarrington Ruvalcaba, former governor of Tamaulipas, for his alleged involvement in drug-related crimes during his tenure as governor of that state. The Attorney General's Office of the Republic (FGR) reported that, through the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime (FEMDO), the Second District Judge of Federal Criminal Proceedings in Tamaulipas initiated legal proceedings against him.
The FGR accused Yarrington of collaborating with criminal groups while in office, based on testimonies from protected witnesses. The former governor had an arrest warrant since February 2012 for these charges. According to the investigation, he was accused of receiving bribes from organized crime.
During the preliminary investigation, it was mentioned that Yarrington allegedly had connections with drug cartels, according to testimonies from cooperating witnesses identified as "Jennifer" and "Pitufo." However, these testimonies have been questioned due to a lack of evidence and consistency in other judicial cases, similar to what happened with other accused individuals such as Generals Tomás Ángeles Dauahare, Roberto Dawe, Ricardo Escorcia, and Rubén Pérez, who were recently exonerated of drug trafficking charges.
After being deported from the United States last April, Yarrington was informed by Mexican authorities about the arrest warrant against him at the Tijuana border crossing in Baja California. He was transferred to the high-security federal prison of Altiplano, in the State of Mexico, where he remains at the disposal of the corresponding judge to continue the legal process against him.
