Matamoros Mayor Detained Over Drug Links

U.S. authorities interrogated the mayor of Matamoros, Alberto Granados Fávila, about his relationship with a businessman arrested in January 2025 in Brownsville with 8.8 kilos of cocaine. This businessman, identified as Édgar Alejandro “V,” allegedly crossed drugs on three occasions according to DEA reports.

Sources close to the investigation revealed that U.S. intelligence agencies had been monitoring the mayor for months for alleged links to the Gulf Cartel. The immediate revocation of his visa would be based on these investigations, marking the first time that a sitting mayor of Matamoros faces such measures.

So far, the Tamaulipas government has not issued statements on the matter. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security would have notified its Mexican counterparts, although it has not been officially confirmed whether they will share the evidence that prompted the measure.

The incident occurred when the mayor was attempting to cross the Brownsville-Matamoros international bridge and was intercepted at the second border inspection point. In an unprecedented event for Tamaulipas, Mayor Alberto Granados Fávila was detained and denied his U.S. visa by agents of the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on the night of Thursday, April 17.
