New Traffic Fine Adjustment in Mexico City

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported that, starting from February 1 of this year until January 31, 2025, the value of the Unit of Measurement and Update (UMA) will be 108.57 pesos per day. This update is made taking into account the variations of the National Consumer Price Index (INPC), which will impact the adjustment of traffic fines in Mexico City.

According to the relevant provisions, the update of the UMA value comes into effect on February 1 of each year, once published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).

Some fines for traffic violations in Mexico City have been updated in accordance with this change. Among the fines that may be imposed on those who violate traffic rules are parking in yellow lines, in exclusive places for firefighters, double parking, on sidewalks, in spaces designated for people with disabilities, among others. The monetary penalties range from 715 to 4,779.60 pesos, depending on the offense committed.

It is important to take these updates into account to avoid surprises and to comply with the relevant traffic regulations. The UMA, implemented in 2016, replaced the minimum wage as the basis for determining certain payments and legal obligations in the country, ensuring a periodic update of its value.
