In the first four months of this year, the Attorney General's Office (FGJ) of Mexico City returned two thousand 446 vehicles to their owners that were under custody due to judicial procedures. During that period, the attorney's office made five thousand 600 calls to locate the owners of these vehicles. However, only about half of the returns were completed. The authority emphasized that the return of vehicles has no cost for the owners; only documentation that proves ownership of the vehicle is required.
The Strategy for the Return and Junking of Guarded Vehicles and Release of Public Space includes the return of vehicles under custody and the junking of abandoned units on streets near properties of the Attorney's Office of Mexico City. The objective is to free up roadways and improve the urban image of the capital. To carry out this strategy, a specialized team has been formed to contact owners by phone to notify them about the return of their vehicles.
Additionally, a legal process is underway for the junking of abandoned units, which has resulted in the destruction of 154 vehicles, equivalent to more than 77 tons of recyclable material. So far, interventions have taken place in various areas of the city, removing vehicles in the Buenavista neighborhood, Jardín Avenue in Azcapotzalco, Matamoros Street in downtown Tlalpan, and currently on Dr. José María Vértiz Avenue in the Doctores neighborhood.
The Attorney General's Office stated that it will continue with the release of roadways and junking of units to ensure safer streets for citizens and allow owners to recover their property.
