Sheinbaum Rejects 'Plan B' with Canada Amid T-MEC Uncertainty

On Tuesday, Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed reports that she is working on a Plan B with Canada amid the possibility that the trilateral trade agreement T-MEC may not continue, during the visit of Canadian business leaders and politicians to Mexico. "T-MEC is going to remain," she said. Economic stagnation is dominating the start of the year, and Ebrard is gaining ground on the future of T-MEC. She explained that a commission of 400 Canadian business leaders arrived on Monday, seeking not only to strengthen ties with the Mexican government and business community but also to propose new investments. She also affirmed that there is significant interest in investing in Mexico, although she acknowledged the business community's complaints about the slow pace of procedures. On this matter, she assured that her government is working to facilitate this bureaucracy. Today, the president will receive Canada's Minister of Commerce, Dominic LeBlanc, at the National Palace. "We are not working on a Plan B, but rather strengthening the relationship with Canada," the president responded during her conference at the National Palace when questioned about reports of seeking to bolster ties in case the agreement does not move forward. The president dismissed this scenario: "The Mexico-Canada relationship is strengthening, but that does not mean the treaty will not exist. Present at the meeting will be the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard; the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit, Edgar Amador; the Secretary of Energy, Luz Elena González; and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente.
