'Hoy No Circula' Program to Continue as Usual During Holy Week

The 'Hoy No Circula' program will remain in operation during Holy Thursday and Good Friday 2026, with no changes or suspensions, reported the Ministry of the Environment (Sedema). Therefore, drivers must respect the usual restrictions despite the holiday period. The measure applies in the 16 mayoralties of Mexico City and in 40 municipalities of the State of Mexico, as part of the metropolitan strategy to reduce pollutant emissions. To date, authorities have not announced modifications to the program during the holy days, which means it will operate regularly, even though thousands of people leave the city on vacation. Who can circulate on Good Friday? For Holy Thursday (April 2), vehicles with a green sticker, license plates ending in 1 and 2, and holograms 1 and 2 will not be able to circulate. Meanwhile, on Good Friday (April 3), the restriction will be for cars with a blue sticker, plates ending in 9 and 0, also with holograms 1 and 2. Vehicles with holograms 00 and 0 are exempt from these limitations, as well as other exceptions provided for in current regulations. The 'Hoy No Circula' program, implemented since 1989 in response to environmental contingencies, aims to reduce air pollution through vehicle restriction on weekdays. In recent years, the scheme has expanded its coverage, incorporating new metropolitan areas such as Toluca and Santiago Tianguistenco, in order to strengthen emissions control in the central region of the country. Authorities recommended that the population plan their trips in advance and consider the current restrictions, as there will be no exceptions for the Easter holiday period.
