The Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, announced that starting in 2025, priority will be given in public contracts to companies led by women or those with gender-balanced boards. This approach is part of affirmative actions aimed at supporting the economic growth of women.
During the event "Women of the Future," the capital's leader proposed establishing an alliance between business leaders and the local government. She also called on the economic sector to promote financial inclusion and achieve gender parity in their leadership and boards.
In her words, Clara Brugada emphasized: "If there is a company and a company led by women, 10% of all our actions related to hiring will ensure that women entrepreneurs are the beneficiaries, those who will be considered."
She also stated: "This contributes to the formation of more companies led by women." The Head of Government stressed the importance of combating the glass ceilings that limit women's advancement and expressed her desire to make Mexico City a benchmark for gender parity.
On another note, Clara Brugada announced that starting next year, her administration will launch a program to promote women's economic autonomy. This program will include financing, training, and education to boost the development of businesses led by women. Additionally, 200 childcare and development centers will be implemented, some of which will be located in the Units of Transformation and Organization for Inclusion and Social Harmony (UTOPÍAS). These units will offer services such as public laundries, cafeterias, and spas as part of an extensive Care System for Mexico City.
The Secretary of Economic Development (Sedeco), Manola Zabalza, emphasized that employment is the best social program, especially for women, and stressed the need for them to hold leadership positions in the business sector. In her words, "We want more women to be making decisions, not only in government but also in business." Zabalza cited figures like Secretary Daptnhe, Head of Government Clara Brugada, and President Claudia Sheinbaum as role models in this regard.
