Growth of Pet Funeral Services in Mexico

In Mexico, with a population of approximately 80 million pets and an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years for each, the demand for pet funeral services is constantly increasing. It is estimated that this sector will be a growing market over the next 15 years, with a forecast of double-digit growth rates. Furthermore, it is estimated that at least 200 specialized centers would be needed in the country to meet this demand.

According to Iván Pérez, operations manager of Funeral Pet, currently 85% of the companies offering funeral services for pets in Mexico City and its Metropolitan Area operate informally. This situation poses significant risks for pet owners, as they could receive incorrect remains in urns when handling processes clandestinely.

Juan Rodríguez, CEO of Grupo Gayosso and vice president of the Confederation of Chambers of Commerce, Services, and Tourism of Mexico (Concanaco), pointed out that the pet funeral sector has significant growth potential due to the increasing awareness of the role pets play in Mexican families. However, he warns that the country currently lacks enough specialized centers to meet market needs.

Currently, pets are considered family members by many Mexicans, and a study by the Public Opinion Center of the University of Valle de México (UVM) indicates that up to 43% of Mexicans agree to treat their companion animals as if they were children. This has driven the market for pet funeral services and the hiring of pre-emptive plans for their passing, a constantly growing sector.

The increase in the hiring of funeral pre-planning services for pets was 48% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to data from Manuel Ramírez of the funeral group J. García López. The company Pets in the Sky, specialized in these types of services, has experienced notable growth. To ensure a dignified farewell, farewell rituals and cremation are offered in a respectful environment for families.

On the other hand, there are warnings about the operation of informal companies in the sector, which could jeopardize the quality and veracity of the services offered. It is essential for pet owners to choose reliable and specialized centers to ensure an adequate cremation and farewell process, avoiding unhealthy practices that could pose public health risks. The costs of recovering ashes vary according to the size of the pet and focus on providing a respectful service that meets families' needs at such a delicate time.
