Proposal for a Second Floor with Bicycle Lane in CDMX

Urbanism specialists have supported the proposal of the capital government to build a second level bike lane over Calzada de Tlalpan, a main road in Mexico City that connects from San Antonio Abad to Taxqueña. This project is considered a wise measure that could alleviate congestion on this essential artery.

The idea of installing a second level bike lane over Metro Line 2 has generated positive opinions. According to Antonio Suárez Bonilla, an academic from the Faculty of Architecture at UNAM, this proposal will not only provide space for pedestrians and cyclists, but it could also serve as a rainwater collector, green area, and promote bicycle use, thus improving mobility in the city.

On the other hand, Claudio Nieto, an urbanism specialist, emphasizes that Calzada de Tlalpan is currently designed primarily for motorized mobility, leaving little space for pedestrians and cyclists. The idea of transforming an elevated stretch into a space for these users can be interesting, as long as it is backed by solid studies.

Despite the potential benefit this project could offer for the city, there are concerns about financing and the duration of the work. The history of unfinished infrastructure projects in the city generates skepticism among the population. However, it is hoped that local authorities can carry out this project effectively and transparently, providing significant improvements to mobility in the capital.

Since the inauguration of the elevated section of Metro Line 2, issues such as flooding during the rainy season and mobility difficulties for pedestrians on Calzada de Tlalpan have arisen. These inconveniences highlight the lack of consideration for basic mobility aspects in the initial planning of important roads in the city.
