New Restrictions on Vehicle Circulation in Mexico City

The 'Hoy no circula' program continues to regulate vehicle circulation in Mexico City and the State of Mexico to combat air pollution. Clean vehicles remain exempt from restrictions. This initiative aims to improve public health by reducing emissions during workdays.

New Restrictions on Vehicle Circulation in Mexico City

The Hoy No Circula program will continue on Monday, January 20, 2025, the day when restrictions will return to reduce the number of vehicles on the streets and decrease pollutant emissions that affect public health. In contrast, on January 19, 2025, there will be no restrictions, as is customary on weekends.

Since its implementation, Hoy No Circula has been an effective strategy for regulating the number of vehicles on the streets of Mexico City (CDMX) and the State of Mexico, especially on working days. This program is an important tool for addressing air pollution in urban areas with high vehicle density.

The main objective of the program is to reduce pollutant emission levels from vehicles, which negatively affect air quality and the health of citizens. Vehicle circulation is limited based on the final number of the license plate and the type of environmental hologram they have. Vehicles with holograms 1 and 2 are the most affected by the restrictions due to their significant contribution to pollutant emissions.

On the other hand, vehicles with holograms 00, 0, hybrids, or electric are exempt from these limitations, promoting the use of more environmentally friendly vehicles. One of the highlighted features of this program is its adaptability to daily air and weather conditions. However, it is important to keep in mind that restrictions return with the arrival of the workweek.

Hoy No Circula is not restricted solely to CDMX and Edomex. On days with high pollution levels, restrictions may be intensified to further reduce the circulation of vehicles. Conversely, on days with low pollution levels or favorable weather conditions, restrictions may be less strict or even lifted. On Sundays, the restrictions are suspended. This decision is based on the lower work and school activity of those days, which generally translates into lower traffic and pollution levels.

The program also affects states like Hidalgo, Morelos, Puebla, and Tlaxcala, with regulations similar to those of CDMX and Edomex. In these places, the program is applied following a comparable scheme regardless of the type of hologram or the license plate number of the vehicles.
