18th Kite Contest at Museo de Arte Popular

The Trust of the Museum of Popular Art (MAP) has launched the call for participation in the 18th edition of the Kite Contest, which will take place this year. The initiative aims to bring together artisans and artists from around the world to promote and preserve this unique artistic form.

The winning pieces, chosen by a jury appointed by the MAP, will have the opportunity to be exhibited at the Museum of Popular Art, in addition to receiving a monetary reward. To participate, interested parties must register their works before February 6, 2025.

The kites must be made with natural materials such as paper, palm, reeds, and wood, and employ traditional artisanal techniques. The pieces are required to have dimensions ranging from 1.50 x 3 meters to 3 x 6 meters, excluding the tail. Works that do not meet these requirements will be disqualified and will not be exhibited.

The submission of registered kites will take place on February 19 and 20 at the MAP Exhibitions Coordination. The jury will publicly announce its decision on Saturday, February 22, coinciding with the awards ceremony. The winning works will be displayed in the museum's courtyard from February 22 to April 6, 2025.

In addition to the three main prizes, there may be up to 10 honorable mentions that will receive a monetary reward. The first place will receive 20,000 pesos, second place 15,000 pesos, and third place 10,000 pesos. The kite, being a colorful flying toy that has transcended generations and cultures, is a symbol of joy, creativity, tradition, and culture in festivities around the world, such as the Day of the Dead in Mexico and the Makar Sankranti festival in India.
