More than 500 couples participated this Friday, February 14, in a collective wedding at the cultural center of Los Pinos, in Mexico City, on the occasion of Valentine's Day. Brides and grooms, dressed in elegant or simple but meaningful outfits, exchanged loving glances. The mayor of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, served as the honorary godmother for the couples, who celebrated the ceremony dancing to the rhythm of cumbia.
"We want a city governed by love. A loving, libertarian, supportive, fraternal city, free of violence at home and in the streets," emphasized Brugada. Brugada Molina gifted the couples cake, wine glasses, food, and a "love kit," which contained antibacterial gel, wet wipes, condoms, and lubricant. She also addressed a special message to the eight same-sex couples who got married, assuring that CDMX is a space where "the right to love and establish commitments through equal marriages is recognized."
The key moment came when judge Marsella Lizeth de la Torre Martínez, from the Civil Registry of Mexico City, asked, "Is it your will to join in marriage?" The answer was a loud "Yes!!!" in unison, followed by applause and tears. As a surprise act, the Head of Government brought La Sonora Santanera as a gift, unleashing the joy of the newlyweds.
As the first chords of Perfume de Gardenias played, the dance floor filled with couples who, amid smiles and hugs, celebrated the start of a new stage. "We live together... and we thought: let's truly commit to being together for the rest of our lives on Valentine's Day," said a participant named Karen to Reuters. From early on, the gardens of the former presidential residence filled with excitement.
