Pope Francis' Historic Visit to Mexico

Pope Francis made his first route in Mexico from the Presidential Hangar to the Apostolic Nunciature, located in the Guadalupe Inn neighborhood, around 7:45 PM local time. During his visit, the Supreme Pontiff traveled to various important cities in the country.

On Saturday, February 13, 2016, the Pope left the Nunciature at 8:45 AM and headed to the National Palace, where he met with President Peña Nieto. After the meeting, he took a tour in the papal mobile through the Zócalo square.

The next day, February 14, 2016, the Pope visited the site of the Ballisco Auto Market in Ecatepec, State of Mexico. This visit marked a little over nine years since his last presence in Mexico.

Pope Francis arrived in Mexico on Friday, February 12, 2016, and went to the Ecatepec Study Center, where he presided over a mass attended by a large crowd at the “El Caracol” site. Subsequently, he continued his journey through various cities in the country such as Chiapas, Michoacán, and Ciudad Juárez, where he interacted with different communities and celebrated masses with migrants and victims of violence.

The invitation to visit Mexico was initially extended by former President Enrique Peña Nieto during Pope Francis's official visit on June 7, 2014. The Pope confirmed his travel to the country during a mass dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe in the Vatican on December 12, 2015.

Pope Francis's visit to Mexico culminated with a farewell ceremony at the Ciudad Juárez airport on February 17, 2016, where he departed for Rome, Italy, concluding his significant journey through the country.
