
On the occasion of International Women's Day, thousands of women gathered in Mexico City to join the global 8M movement and protest for their rights. At the National Palace, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, led a speech after being honored with the Staff of Command by indigenous women who performed an ancestral ritual.
Alongside Sheinbaum were the head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, and the head of the Secretariat of Women, Citlalli Hernández. The presence of various groups was highlighted, such as doctors and health workers, who marched along Paseo de la Reforma toward the Palace of Fine Arts. The head of Government, Clara Brugada, was seen among the streets accompanied by more women.
Around 3:00 PM, the majority of the groups arrived at the Historic Center, where metal barriers were erected for the protest. There were skirmishes and charros who joined the march, even on their horses. The group "Black Bloc" began to cause damage to windows in front of the National Palace and burned a newsstand.
At strategic points like the Glorieta de las Mujeres que luchan, different groups joined the march with slogans and burning objects. Meanwhile, a group of mothers who are victims of femicide staged a hunger strike in the Historic Center. The groups marched along the main avenues of Mexico City with protest signs and purple clothing, highlighting the need for more rights to achieve substantive equality.
Since 11:00 AM, women's groups gathered at different points in the capital, such as Paseo de la Reforma and the Monument to the Revolution, to join the protest on the occasion of International Women's Day.
