The Mexican Senate approved the issuance of commemorative coins for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including a collection featuring nine coins. This marks a significant moment as the World Cup will host 48 teams for the first time.

The Senate of the Republic of Mexico has approved the issuance of various commemorative coins, among which stands out a collection related to the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be organized by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. According to the joint commissions of Finance and Public Credit, as well as the First Legislative Studies, this collection will consist of nine coins, divided into three gold, three silver, and three bi-metallic current-currency coins, with nominal values of 25, 10, and 20 pesos.

The 2026 tournament will be historic as it will be the first to feature 48 teams instead of the traditional 32. Senators highlighted that the FIFA World Cup represents a great opportunity to showcase the cultural elements associated with football that generate passion in the country. Additionally, other commemorative collections were approved, such as coins celebrating the Centenary of the Foundation of the Bank of Mexico and the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mexico Collection.

Senator Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez pointed out that these coins aim to honor significant historical events of the country, as well as to promote national identity and cultural heritage. For her part, the president of the First Legislative Studies Commission, Simey Olvera Bautista, emphasized that these collections strengthen Mexican identity.

Estadio Azteca in Mexico City will host the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly organized by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This iconic venue will be the host for its third World Cup, having previously hosted in 1970 and 1986. The opening match is scheduled for June 11, marking the third time Estadio Azteca organizes such an event.

The United States will take on most of the tournament's organization, with 11 venues out of a total of 16, including cities like Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, and New York. Mexico will have venues in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, while Canada will have Vancouver and Toronto as host cities.
