5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Affects Mexico City Events

An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 shook Oaxaca on Friday, March 14, triggering the seismic alert in Mexico City and causing the evacuation of buildings. Even Miguel Bosé's concert at the National Auditorium was temporarily halted so that attendees could evacuate and take appropriate precautions in case of an earthquake.

According to the Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection, no damage was reported in the Mexican capital. The Fire Department of CDMX confirmed that after a thorough inspection, no incidents were recorded at the stations. However, a question arose about why the alert from the Mexico Alert and Integral Risk Management Platform, an application installed on many mobile phones, was not activated.

In response to this question, the mentioned platform issued a statement via social media, explaining that it did detect the earthquake and that, after an evaluation confirmed by sensors close to the epicenter, the activation of the official alert in cities such as Mexico City, Toluca, Cuernavaca, Puebla, Oaxaca, Acapulco, and Chilpancingo was justified.

"Unfortunately, due to a temporary suspension of our services, the SASSLA systems could not issue the alert through our mobile application on this occasion," the platform mentioned in its social media statement. Additionally, it was pointed out that this interruption was due to the increase in operational costs of the infrastructure for the dissemination of alerts, which is why all SASSLA services are temporarily suspended after more than 3,700 days of continuous operation.

The platform assured that they are working diligently to restore the service as soon as possible and ensure its continuity in the future. Moreover, they asked users not to cancel their SASSLA PREMIUM subscriptions and, if they have not done so already, to consider subscribing, as their contribution is crucial for this platform to continue saving lives.
