The Government of Mexico City canceled the performance of the Argentine band Onda Vaga at the Night of Spring, which was scheduled for Saturday, March 22, due to multiple reports of sexual abuse and harassment that emerged in 2018. The Ministry of Culture of Mexico City made this decision considering the complainants and based on the accusations of harassment and sexual abuse against the Argentine band.
In 2018, a group of women revealed testimonies against Onda Vaga, initially 10, which later increased to 45 accusations of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. The reports were published on a website and popularized through Argentine media and social networks. Women shared experiences of abuse by members of the band, in various contexts, including sexual-affective relationships, one-night encounters, and concerts.
The Ministry of Culture of Mexico City expressed regret for the inconveniences caused by the cancellation of Onda Vaga's performance at the Night of Spring, apologizing and reiterating its commitment to promoting a violence-free environment to guarantee cultural rights. It is unknown whether any event will be held to compensate for the cancellation of the band.
The allegations against Onda Vaga in 2018 included testimonies of abuse, physical and psychological mistreatment, some of which involved women claiming to have been victims when they were minors. The band denied the accusations, claiming that none of its members were sexual abusers or criminals, although they admitted their insensitivity and arrogance in dealing with women. As a consequence, the band's European tour was canceled that year, and they stayed away from major stages and festivals in Argentina for several years.
