Unique Show Celebrating Mexican Identity in Mexico City

A unique show in Mexico City combines ballet, contemporary dance, and multimedia to celebrate Mexican identity. The program features a tribute to alebrijes artisans, a "Nutcracker" like no other, and a concert dedicated to a Mexican blues legend.

A unique show combining ballet, contemporary dance, and multimedia elements will be held in Mexico City to celebrate Mexican identity through visual poetry.

The performance consists of two acts. The first, titled "Alebrisueños," pays homage to Mexican artisan Pedro Linares, the creator of alebrijes. The music will be performed by the Orquesta del Teatro de Bellas Artes, conducted by Azerbaijani Ayyub Guliyev.

The second act features "Un Cascanueces diferente" ("A Different Nutcracker")—an unconventional version of the ballet. This comedy features men in tutus and pointe shoes, staged by the company Males On Pointe in a co-production with New York's Ballet Eloelle. According to artistic director Víctor Treviño and producer Tonatiuh Gómez, the performance demonstrates that "creativity has no gender, dreams have no borders, and art can make us laugh, move us, and unite us at the same time."

Additionally, Mexico City will host several other productions of "The Nutcracker." The Teatro de la Ciudad "Esperanza Iris" will present two different versions. The "Ensamble de Danza Clásica del Centro Cultural Ollin Yoliztli" will perform its choreographic version based on Marius Petipa's original choreography. The Compañía Nacional de Danza and the Orquesta del Teatro de Bellas Artes will give ten performances at the Auditorio Nacional.

Furthermore, on Friday, December 12th, the Centro Cultural José Martí will host a tribute to Mario Compañet, a key figure in the dissemination of blues music in Mexico. The event will feature the bands San Luis Blues, Montaño Blues Combo, La Rambla, Juksons, and Follaje. Compañet, who passed away on May 19th of this year, hosted the radio show "El blues inmortal" for 27 years and possessed one of the largest blues record collections in Mexico.

All performances will take place in Mexico City (CDMX), with free access to some of them.
