Four Cars Towed for Illegal Street Racing in Mexico City

Four cars were towed to an impound lot in Mexico City after it was reported they were being used for an illegal street racing event (‘arrancones’) in Coyoacán, near the Oasis plaza, on the night of Saturday, March 21. The incident occurred on the streets of Miguel Ángel de Quevedo and Universidad, in the Oxtopulco neighborhood, where drivers were preparing to begin the illegal event. Officers from the Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) implemented a traffic and security operation against the concentration of cars that were blocking the roadway ‘and putting the integrity of users and their own physical safety at risk, in addition to violating the Traffic Regulations’. The result of the police deployment was 12 traffic violations, the seizure of seven guarantees, and four cars being towed to a vehicle depot. Mexico City authorities reported that some of those sanctioned for street racing did not have the required documentation, although they did not specify the fines for the misuse of public roads. Last week, Mexico City authorities towed seven vehicles to the impound lot for participating in street racing, in an event that was intervened by the SSC in the Tlalpan borough, on the streets of Albora and Cúspide, in the Parque del Pedregal neighborhood. On that occasion, the SSC brought tow trucks to move the cars, which were lined up on the roadway where the event was allegedly going to take place. According to Nmás, the SSC has received at least 40 reports of speeding cars in the last two years, reflecting the popularity of ‘arrancones’ events on Mexico City’s avenues. Some of the sanctions for participating in street racing in Mexico City are: Fines of up to 3,000 pesos. 36-hour administrative arrest. Loss of up to 6 points on a Mexico City driver's license for those who participate in these illegal events.
