Verónica Castro is not only one of the most iconic figures in Mexican television and entertainment, but she also has solid academic training from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), one of the country's most important institutions. Before becoming a leading figure in TV programs and telenovelas, the actress balanced her university studies with her pregnancy with her son, Cristian Castro.
She studied International Relations and, upon graduating, contributed not only to her personal and professional development but also years later inspired the performer of 'Azul' to return to his high school studies.
How was Verónica Castro's time at UNAM?
Verónica Castro's story is marked not only by her success on television but also by the personal and academic challenges she faced during her university education. After completing high school and college, her mother wanted her to get a degree, as she herself was not interested in fame.
'Forget about your job, about being an artist, and let's finish that bachelor's degree,' her mother told her. 'School first, then everything else.'
The actress pursued a bachelor's degree in International Relations at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences in Ciudad Universitaria, a period that was demanding both inside and outside the classroom.
'It was tough... I studied at UNAM, I finished middle school, high school, so my mom wanted a career because she wasn't interested in fame,' she recalled in a 2019 interview with the program 'Tap Tap,' remembering the discipline instilled in her by her mother. 'If your grades drop, I'm pulling you out of everything else.'
During her final years at university, Verónica Castro faced one of the most difficult moments of her life while studying pregnant, in a context she says was not well-received: 'I got pregnant... it was very difficult, it wasn't well-looked-upon at school, it was a huge scandal. I went with a huge belly.'
She summarized this stage, explaining: 'They got a little angry with me for my thesis because I talked about things that bothered Televisa, but I managed to get the paperwork together, I worked hard, and they gave me the opportunity.'
Regarding this period, her son, Cristian Castro, has also highlighted her determination: 'A beautiful girl who could have taken advantage of her beauty didn't, she wanted to make a difference, she studied broadcasting, she studied IR at UNAM, she has her thesis (...) she went pregnant to take her exams,' he commented in an interview with Gustavo Adolfo Infante.
Cristian Castro resumes his studies inspired by his mom
Cristian Castro resumed his high school studies at age 51, inspired by his mother's academic background.
'My mom inspired me, she was able to graduate. I felt motivated and in debt to her. A pregnant woman, with a lot of work and a complicated economic situation, she did it,' he declared for 'Ventaneando' on March 26.
According to the singer, his recent academic education was complicated by concerts, but he didn't make excuses and even took exams from other countries. 'If I had failed, I would have never gone back,' he confessed while also highlighting the support of his mother, Socorro Castro.
Despite the adversities, he managed to finish his studies, combining his academic training with his artistic career.
