Security for the traditional Viacrucis representation in Iztapalapa is being strengthened this year with a 26% increase in the video surveillance system, growing from 637 cameras in 2024 to 805 in 2026, reported the Command, Control, Computing, Communications and Citizen Contact Center (C5) of Mexico City. For the 2026 Holy Week celebrations, C5 will deploy a mobile C2M unit on Cerro de la Estrella, one of the most crowded points during the representation. Additionally, it has enabled a mirror signal in the Iztapalapa borough, which will allow the retransmission and real-time monitoring of the cameras from the borough's facilities. The general coordinator of C5, Salvador Guerrero Chiprés, highlighted that these actions are part of the comprehensive security operation to guarantee the tranquility of attendees. According to the official, during Holy Week 2025, a decrease of 11.3% in incidents within the Viacrucis perimeter was registered compared to 2024. This downward trend continues in 2026, as a 17.5 percent reduction in crime incidence was reported on Palm Sunday compared to the previous year. Guerrero Chiprés emphasized that these results are strengthened by the inter-institutional coordination of the Holy Week Operation, instructed by the Head of Government, Clara Brugada. The Viacrucis representation in Iztapalapa is one of the most important religious traditions in Mexico City, which brings together thousands of visitors every year, so the capital's authorities are reinforcing security and surveillance measures to ensure a crime-free holiday.
