Union: Mexico City Metro operates without adequate maintenance

The National Union of Workers of the Collective Transport System (SNTSTC) denounced that the Mexico City Metro operates without adequate maintenance or sufficient budget. According to the union's National Executive Committee, the current state of the rolling stock poses a risk to passenger safety. Out of a total of 391 trains, 70% have not received general maintenance, having traveled more than 2 million kilometers, despite the limit for their maintenance being 750,000 kilometers.

The workers also point out that the remaining 30% of the units receive incomplete or partial maintenance, while 84 trains are stopped in workshops due to a lack of spare parts. In its diagnosis, the SNTSTC states that the service is deteriorated due to the lack of planning and commitment from the capital's authorities. The communiqué emphasizes that only 68 trains are in good condition, circulating on Lines 1 and 12.

In this situation, the union demanded comprehensive and permanent maintenance of trains, tracks, and fixed installations, as well as immediate attention to structural and operational failures of the network. The organization also spoke out against the execution of unnecessary superficial beautification works at stations.

Finally, the Union positions itself against the reduction of lanes on Tlalpan Avenue and the elevated track being built parallel to Line 2, as it compromises the safety of the Metro's facilities.

Since last weekend until this Monday, April 13, strikes by unionized workers were recorded, who opposed working overtime, which affected the availability of trains in circulation on the Metro.

The government of Mexico City announced that during the afternoon of today it will establish contact with the leadership of the SNTSC to negotiate and restore the full operation of trains throughout the network. “There is certainty that the conciliation with the SNTSTC will allow the normal operation of the network to be restored by tomorrow,” the official statement says.
