Mexico City Unveils 'Green World Cup' for 2026

Mexico City is preparing to make history during the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an ambitious environmental strategy. Head of Government Clara Brugada presented the 10 actions of the “Green World Cup,” an initiative aimed at making the capital a global benchmark for sustainability during the event. “We want a clean World Cup, a different World Cup,” stated the leader, highlighting that this event represents a unique opportunity to transform the city with an environmental vision. Key initiatives include: eliminating single-use plastics in stadiums, Fan Fest areas, and tourist zones; installing rainwater harvesting systems, solar heaters, and urban gardens near the Azteca Stadium; transforming waste into urban infrastructure like benches; launching eight agrotourism routes; beautifying main avenues with a million locally produced flowers; creating over 500,000 traditional noisemakers from natural materials; promoting sustainable transport, cycling, and remote work; setting up waste sorting stations; and featuring local products. Brugada emphasized that 60% of the capital's territory is conservation land, and the “Green World Cup” aligns with international sustainability goals. The plan's success depends on the participation of all citizens, businesses, and visitors, aiming to leave a lasting environmental legacy after the tournament.
