The head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, announced the creation of a "Football Utopia" as part of the preparations for the 2026 World Cup. This project will be dedicated to football enthusiasts and aims to involve all city residents in celebrating this major sporting event.
"We will have the opportunity to fill the neighborhoods with murals and set up football stages throughout the city so that we all experience this passion," expressed Brugada during her announcement. The intention is to unleash a sporting and cultural process in all neighborhoods, allowing the "football party" to be accessible to the entire community.
The establishment of an Organizing Committee for the 2026 Football World Cup was another of the points highlighted by Brugada. This committee will consist of officials from her administration and executives related to football, who will be responsible for coordinating the necessary activities to ensure that Mexico stands out internationally during the event.
Regarding the composition of the Organizing Committee, it was announced that representatives from various government secretariats, business leaders from the hotel sector, as well as executives from the Estadio Azteca, the Mexican Football Federation, and FIFA will be present. The main objective will be to welcome more than five million tourists and project the international image of Mexico City as an attractive place for tourism and investments.
Clara Brugada also mentioned that urban improvement work is being carried out around Estadio Azteca, the venue for the 2026 World Cup inauguration in Mexico. This work includes the recovery of the original architecture of Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and improving connections between the airports, the hotel zone, and the stadium.
